Fire razes groom’s home days before wedding

A fire outbreak has destroyed the newly completed home of a groom-to-be, Malam Rilwanu Bello, in the Tudun Wada area of Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, just three days before his wedding.

An eyewitness, Malam Ukashatu Mohammed, told our correspondent on Friday that the incident occurred late Wednesday night while relatives of the bride were moving furniture and other household items into the house ahead of the ceremony scheduled for today.

He said neighbours noticed smoke billowing from the building hours after the items had been arranged and quickly alerted others, who rushed to the scene and managed to contain the fire.

“Unfortunately, about 90 per cent of the properties that were moved into the house, worth millions of naira, were destroyed,” Mohammed said.

Attempts to reach the couple for comments were unsuccessful, as they were reportedly occupied with distributing wedding invitations to family and friends.

Meanwhile, a director at the state Fire Service, who spoke anonymously, said the agency had yet to receive an official report of the incident.
