Funke Akindele hits back at critics over ‘dancing’ movie marketing style

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has responded to criticism surrounding her unconventional movie marketing approach, particularly her use of dance and comedy to promote her films.

Akindele, who currently holds the record as the highest-grossing filmmaker in Nollywood, shared her thoughts in a series of posts on her Instagram Story on Saturday.

Reacting to critics, the actress said she was not responsible for anyone’s lack of success and stressed that there was room for everyone to thrive in the industry.

“I’m not the one hindering your progress. Ka rin ka po, yiye nin ye ni,” she wrote.

She added that rather than criticise others, filmmakers should focus on carving out their own niche.

“If you can’t beat them or join them, create your own path. Don’t let jealousy consume you. The sky is big enough for everybody to fly,” she said.

Akindele encouraged her colleagues to develop their own promotional ideas or engage professionals to market their projects effectively.

“Go ahead and create alternative promotion or marketing strategies for your business, or hire a company to handle it. You can do it.

“The opportunities are endless, and everyone has their own path. I’m focused on mine, and I trust God’s plan for me,” she added.

Funke Akindele’s comments come amid her continued dominance at the Nigerian box office.

She currently holds the record for the top three highest-grossing Nollywood films: Behind The Scenes (2025), which has grossed over ₦2.4 billion; Everybody Loves Jenifer (2024), which earned ₦1.88 billion; and A Tribe Called Judah (2023), which grossed ₦1.4 billion.
