The Gambia Police Force has arrested a 35-year-old Nigerian, Audu Williams, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Esther Tango, whose body was found in a bush between Kitty and Siffoe villages in the country’s West Coast Region.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the police said the victim’s body was discovered on July 7, 2026, and she was initially unidentified. Investigators later established her identity as a 41-year-old Nigerian after recovering her passport during a search of her residence in Brikama.
According to the police, detectives from the Suba Ward Criminal Investigation Department, supported by the Crime Scene Investigation Team, used witness accounts, forensic evidence and telecommunications records to identify Williams as a suspect before inviting him for questioning.
The police alleged that Williams confessed during interrogation, admitting that he lured the deceased to Kitty on the night of July 6, where the fatal incident occurred before abandoning her body at the scene.
The suspect has been cautioned and remains in police custody. The police said he would be charged and prosecuted in accordance with Gambian law after investigations are concluded.
The Gambia Police Force commended the investigators for their professionalism and diligence, noting that their efforts led to a breakthrough in the case. It added that investigations are still ongoing.
