Ganduje resigns as APC national chairman

Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing health concerns as the reason for his departure.

The former Kano State governor, who assumed office as APC chairman in August 2023, said in his resignation letter that he needs to prioritise his well-being.

Ganduje’s time at the helm of the ruling party was marked by internal disputes, legal battles, and mounting criticism. Although his resignation letter refers to health issues, party insiders suggest political pressure and growing discontent within the APC may have influenced his decision.

Sources allege that accusations of financial impropriety, particularly complaints about excessive fees imposed on aspirants—such as those contesting for FCT area council positions—further strained his leadership.

Ganduje faced several legal challenges during his tenure. In April 2024, a Kano State High Court issued an ex parte order barring him from identifying as an APC member, following a suit by some party executives. Although a separate suit filed by the APC North Central Forum seeking his removal was later dismissed by a Federal High Court in Abuja, tensions within the party persisted.

The APC has not yet released an official statement regarding Ganduje’s resignation. His exit marks a major turning point for the party’s leadership, and political observers are watching closely for the APC’s next steps in addressing the leadership vacuum and internal divisions.
