Gridlock in Abuja as NDC holds convention

Heavy traffic congestion paralysed movement along Ahmadu Bello Way and surrounding roads in Abuja on Saturday as thousands of supporters and delegates attended the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The massive turnout at the convention venue caused severe gridlock across parts of the Central Area, leaving many motorists stranded for hours.

Eyewitnesses said adjoining roads and major intersections were also affected as party supporters, guests and political groups flooded the area.

Traders were seen occupying road shoulders and open spaces around the venue, taking advantage of the large crowd to sell food, drinks and other items.

Supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the Obidient Movement were also spotted chanting solidarity songs, dancing and celebrating around the convention ground, further increasing crowd pressure within the area.

Security personnel were deployed to maintain order, control the crowd and manage traffic around the venue as political activities intensified.

The convention also witnessed a major political development after the party formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.

Delegates reportedly adopted the resolution unanimously after a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene during the convention.

The decision is widely seen as a significant move that could influence opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections and potentially strengthen the chances of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants within the emerging opposition coalition.
