Gunmen attack Oyo prison with explosives, set prisoners free

Suspected gunmen have attacked one of the facilities of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), in Oyo State on Friday night.

The Correctional facility in Abolongo area in Oyo, Oyo State, was attacked by gunmen and prisoners are reportedly set free.

It was gathered that gunmen stormed the facility attacking with grenades to gain access and set the prisoners free.

The attack, it was learnt, left the facility in disarray with warders and prison officials scampering for safety.

As of the time of filing this report, other security agencies have been mobilised to support men and women of the Nigerian Correctional Service in tracking down the fleeing gunmen and rearresting the prisoners.

Mr. Olarewaju Anjorin, the Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Correctional Service, Oyo State Command, has confirmed the attack.

Anjorin said that the attack happened at about 9.50p.m. on Friday.
Anjorin said: “Yes, I can confirm to you that the place was attacked and some of the awaiting inmates were set free.
“I am there right now with the Controller and some other senior officers doing assessment of the damage done to the facility.
“Now, we cannot ascertain the numbers of the inmates freed or people that get injured, but definitely, I will be given you an update later,” he said.
