Gunmen kill 9 travellers in Plateau

Nine travellers have been killed after gunmen opened fire on a bus at Dungus, Kuru District in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident on Monday, September 14, 2026.

Alabo said the command received a distress report at about 7:45 p.m. on Sunday that gunmen operating on a motorcycle had attacked the bus.

Alabo said the Toyota bus was conveying passengers to Jos when the gunmen opened fire.

He noted that seven persons were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others who sustained gunshot injuries later died in hospital.

The police spokesperson said the development brought the total number of fatalities from the attack to nine.

Alabo disclosed that the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Faniyan, immediately mobilised Mobile Police personnel, tactical teams, homicide detectives, and forensic experts to the scene.

He quoted the police commissioner as condemning the attack and describing it as callous, while commiserating with the families of the deceased and residents of Plateau.

He ordered a vigorous manhunt for the perpetrators and directed policemen to work with sister security agencies to ensure the attackers were arrested and prosecuted.
