Former President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, on the occasion of his 89th birthday, saying the ex-Nigerian leader served the country with diligence and determination.
Buhari noted that Gowon set Nigeria on the path of reconciliation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction after the civil war which occurred between July 6, 1967, and January 15, 1970.
The former president said this in a statement issued by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
He stated: “I convey my warm greetings to respected former Head of State, General Gowon on his birthday and pray for his long and healthy life.

“He served Nigeria with diligence and determination. History will kindly remember him for setting the country on the path of reconciliation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction after the civil war.
“Gowon’s National Development Plans, including the Hydroelectric Power at kainji are some of the major achievements of his visionary leadership.
“I remain eternally grateful for his insightful wisdom and support throughout my years in office.”
Gowon, who was born on October 19, 1934, served as the Head of State between August 1, 1966, and July 29, 1975.
