A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread reactions online after recounting how declining to send ₦2,000 to her elder brother led to a painful breakdown in their relationship.
The woman, identified as @nobod3yyyy on X, shared her experience in a viral post, reflecting on what she described as a moment of pride that cost her a close family bond.
She explained that at age 20, after earning her first salary of ₦85,000 and preparing for the National Youth Service Corps, she felt financially independent and was saving up to buy an iPhone 11 due to her damaged phone.
According to her, her brother had reached out requesting ₦2,000 for food, saying he had not eaten all day.
At the time, she had ₦41,000 in her account but declined the request, urging him instead to find work and become self-reliant.
Three days later, she received a distress call from her mother informing her that her brother had collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.
Medical reports indicated he was suffering from an ulcer, exhaustion, and malaria, with treatment costs amounting to ₦78,000—an amount she said she paid immediately.
Despite his recovery, she noted that their relationship never returned to normal.
She said her brother stopped asking her for help, distanced himself emotionally, and gradually cut off communication, including excluding her from personal interactions and social acknowledgements.
The woman reflected that while she later purchased the phone she had been saving for, the emotional cost of her earlier decision lingered.
She concluded that it was not the ₦2,000 that damaged their relationship, but pride—an admission that has since resonated with many social media users, sparking conversations about empathy, family ties, and financial responsibility.
