How Lamine Yamal got his name

Barcelona and Spain forward Lamine Yamal’s name carries a personal story of friendship, gratitude and loyalty dating back to the difficult period before his birth.

The Ballon d’Or account recently revisited the origin of the footballer’s two first names, explaining that “Yamal” is not his surname but his second given name.

Unlike many footballers, Yamal wears both first names on the back of his shirt.

The decision, according to the account, is rooted in the support his parents received from two neighbours while they were living in the Rocafonda neighbourhood of Mataró, Spain.

Before Yamal was born in Esplugues de Llobregat, his parents, Mounir Nasraoui and Shaila Ebana, were reportedly experiencing serious financial difficulties and struggling to meet basic household needs.

During the pregnancy, two neighbours became an important source of assistance to the couple.

One of them was a Gambian-born taxi driver named Lamine. The name, which has Arabic origins, means “the faithful.”

The second was a close friend of African origin named Yamal, a name associated with “beauty” in Arabic.

Grateful for the support both men offered during a challenging period, Nasraoui and Ebana reportedly agreed to name their future son after them.

The child was subsequently registered as Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana, carrying the names of the two men whose kindness had made a lasting impression on his parents.

Although the footballer is known globally as Lamine Yamal, the two names on his shirt represent more than his identity on the pitch.

They serve as a reminder of his family’s roots, the difficulties his parents faced and the loyalty they showed to those who stood by them.

His name, therefore, is not merely a footballing brand. It is a tribute to two neighbours, a promise kept by his parents and a connection to the community that helped shape his beginnings.

For one of football’s brightest young talents, the story behind his name offers a reminder that greatness often has humble origins.
