Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised octogenarians to adopt healthy lifestyles, including regular exercise, adequate rest and moderate eating habits, to increase their chances of living beyond 90 years.
Obasanjo gave the advice on Saturday in Osogbo, Osun State, during a book launch organised to celebrate the 80th birthday of the Asiwaju Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states, Olatunde Badmus.
The former president, who was represented by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, praised Badmus for his achievements in business and leadership.
Speaking through Adeleke, Obasanjo said people who attain the age of 80 must embrace discipline and healthy living to enjoy longer life.
“At the age of 80, let me welcome you to this club. Let me read the rules of the club to you,” he said.
“Your father and mother must not be alive, you must sleep for eight hours every day, you must undertake one hour of daily exercise like walking, and you must eat only twice a day.”
“With obedience to these rules, your admission is registered and your longevity beyond 90 years is assured,” he added.
Adeleke described the celebrant, who is the chairman of Tuns Farms Limited, as a respected statesman who had contributed significantly to business and national development.
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, also paid tribute to Badmus, describing him as a deeply religious and disciplined businessman.
Dangote announced a donation of ₦100 million towards the launch of the commemorative book in honour of the octogenarian.
“I was a young businessman when I met Baba. I want young entrepreneurs to learn from this nobleman,” Dangote said.
He further urged Nigerians to promote unity and support leaders in efforts aimed at nation-building and national development.
Also speaking at the event, the Adeyeye Ogunwusi commended Badmus for building a strong reputation in business and called on Nigerians to emulate his patriotic disposition.
The celebration formed part of activities marking Badmus’ 80th birthday in Osogbo, Osun State.
