The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old suspected armed robber, Atanda Lateef, who confessed that his gang targeted bank customers carrying polythene bags believed to contain large sums of money.
Lateef was apprehended on Wednesday at Imalefalafia area of Ibadan, while his gang leader, identified as Monday, was shot in the thigh during a struggle with police and later died of his injuries.
The suspects, who had been operating with a red motorcycle, were intercepted shortly after robbing and shooting a victim at Anfani Junction.
Police spokesperson, CSP Adewale Osifeso, said operatives recovered a locally-made double-barrel gun, eight live cartridges, ₦202,800 cash, charms, and other items from the gang.
He confirmed that the victim, a teacher, was receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.
Residents of Ibadan, especially in areas where the gang had operated, praised the police, describing Monday as a ruthless killer allegedly linked to multiple murders in Odo Ona Elewe and Challenge areas.
During interrogation, Lateef admitted to joining the gang two months ago after meeting Monday at a marijuana joint in Iwo Road.
He said they carried out at least six operations, usually patrolling bank surroundings between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to spot victims.
“We would block anyone carrying a polythene bag, and Monday would point his gun.
“If they resisted, he would shoot. I was only riding the motorcycle,” he confessed.
Lateef, who claimed to have earned between ₦30,000 and ₦40,000 from each operation, said he was pressured into joining the gang.
He expressed regret, admitting that crime and drugs had ruined his life.
“If God saves me, even if I end up in prison, I will come out reformed and never return to crime,” he vowed.
