IGP denies imposing curfew over planned protest

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has debunked the imposition of a curfew ahead of the planned nationwide protest over economic hardship in Nigeria.

The protest tagged, #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, is scheduled to commence on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

Though there have been appeals from government officials, individuals, and groups to Nigerians to shelve the nationwide protest, scores of citizens declared their readiness to embark on the demonstration, citing hardship in the country.

An online news platform (Not The Star) however reported that the IGP has imposed a strict curfew commencing at 4 p.m. for all protests in the country.

IGP: Foreign mercenaries involved in planned protest

Reacting via a statement on Monday, July 29, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described the report as “false and mischievous”.

Adejobi added: “The NPF hereby categorically states that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has not declared any curfew. Additionally, it is pertinent to state that such information would have been communicated via the official Nigeria Police Force platforms were it true.

“The false publication suggesting otherwise is a product of the authors’ imaginations and does not represent the position of the Nigeria Police.

“We urge all media outlets and the general public to disregard this misinformation and rely on official statements from the Nigeria Police Force or other authorised government agencies.”
