I’ll win Ogun gov race — Obasanjo’s daughter

Former senator and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo, has declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship, expressing confidence that she will emerge victorious.

Speaking on the “Frontline” programme on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese-Ijebu on Wednesday, the former lawmaker said she returned to partisan politics after 15 years to address governance gaps and improve residents’ welfare.

Iyabo, who recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), said public service remains a personal commitment, describing her approach as one focused on giving more than she takes.

“The position I’m going to run for is governor, and I believe it fits the skills I bring to the table,” she said, adding that she hopes her leadership would positively impact the lives of Ogun residents.

Addressing agitation for power to shift to Ogun West, she acknowledged concerns that the zone has yet to produce a governor since the state’s creation but argued that zoning is not constitutionally mandated.

She noted that Ogun Central had produced two governors while Ogun East had produced three, insisting that the situation should not be blamed on any single zone.

On gender considerations, Iyabo said she would not rely on sentiment tied to her being a woman, stressing that she understands the expectations of Ogun West voters and remains sensitive to their demands.

She, however, pledged to support the emergence of a governor from Ogun West after her tenure, maintaining strong confidence in her own chances.

The former commissioner identified late entry into the race and limited campaign funds as key challenges but insisted that elections should not be determined by money alone.

Speaking on her prospects of securing the APC ticket, she said the contest remains open and that she would campaign vigorously alongside other aspirants.

“It’s not 100 per cent for anybody, and it’s not 100 per cent for me. But I will do everything I can to make sure I’m the candidate,” she said.
