Imo LG elections scheduled for September 26

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission has fixed September 26, 2026, for elections into the state’s 27 local government councils.

The commission’s chairman, Charles Ejiogu, announced the date in a statement dated September 11, 2026.

According to him, the elections will cover the chairmanship positions in the 27 local government areas and 305 ward councillorship seats across the state’s 4,758 polling units.

Ejiogu urged all registered political parties and other stakeholders to take note of the date and make the necessary preparations.

He said the election schedule was in line with the commission’s 360-day notice issued on September 18, 2025, pursuant to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.

The statement read, “This is to inform the critical stakeholders, particularly, all registered Political Parties and the general public that elections into the Offices of the 27 LGAs Council Chairmen and 305 Ward Councillors, will hold on Saturday 26th September, 2026 in the 4,758 polling units across Imo State.

“Therefore, all registered Political Parties are hereby requested to take note and do the needful, as the Commission’s 18th September, 2025 ‘360 days’ NOTICE OF ELECTION’ pursuant to section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended refers.”

The commission said consultations with critical stakeholders were still ongoing ahead of the polls.
