INEC defends 2027 election dates, opens door to review

The Independent National Electoral Commission has clarified that the dates scheduled for Nigeria’s 2027 General Election were fixed in line with constitutional, legal and regulatory provisions, while acknowledging concerns raised by stakeholders about potential clashes with national observances.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the commission said the timetable was developed in strict compliance with the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022 and its Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.

INEC explained that its guidelines, in place since 2019, mandate that presidential and National Assembly elections be held on the third Saturday of February in an election year, while governorship and state assembly polls take place two weeks later.

Based on this framework, the commission scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for March 6, 2027.

However, the electoral body noted that it has received feedback from stakeholders over the coincidence of the dates with certain nationally recognised holidays and other observances that could affect voter turnout and participation.

The commission said it remains sensitive to such concerns and has begun consultations to address them. It added that it may seek legislative intervention where necessary, provided any changes remain consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a transparent, inclusive and credible election and assured the public that any further decisions or adjustments would be communicated in due course.
