Insecurity: Opposition senators debunk aborting Buhari’s impeachment

The opposition senators in the National Assembly have debunked the reports that the lawmakers have jettisoned their decision to impeach President Muhammdu Buhari if he fails to address the growing insecurity in the country.

Minority members of the Senate recently walked out of the plenary threatening to commence impeachment procedures against the President if he fails to address the security challenges bedevilling the country.

Reports thereafter emerged that the lawmakers backed down on the plan to remove Buhari after the expiration of the six-week ultimatum handed down on July 27.

Speaking on the development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator representing Osun East senatorial district, Francis Fadahunsi, said it was not true that the opposition lawmakers backtracked on their impeachment plans.

Fadahunsi added that northern senators were in support of the impeachment move against President Buhari.

Also speaking, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) lawmaker representing Abia South, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, dismissed the insinuation that the opposition senators had stepped down the impeachment move.

On his part, the senator representing Benue North West Senatorial District, Sen. Orker Jev, said: “I’m not aware of any such development. Most likely untrue.”

The Senator representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, Abiodun Olujimi, said the reports that the senators were aborting the impeachment were untrue.

“I am not aware of such a decision, it was a settled issue that we have all agreed on the impeachment of the President if the insecurity state of the nation was not addressed.

“We haven’t held any meetings since then; at least to the best of my knowledge. So, things remain as they are,” PUNCH quoted Olujimi as saying.
