June 12: Gov Uba Sani urges renewed commitment to democratic ideals

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has called on Nigerian leaders and citizens to use the Democracy Day celebration as a moment to reaffirm their commitment to democratic principles and collective efforts toward a just and prosperous nation.

In a statement marking the June 12 anniversary, Governor Sani congratulated Nigerians—especially the people of Kaduna State—while emphasizing the importance of unity in building a society that ensures a better life for all.

He urged reflection on the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s democratic heroes, stating that their courage should continue to inspire the protection of freedoms and the advancement of democracy.

Governor Sani described the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election as a painful moment in Nigeria’s history, yet one that galvanized citizens and activists to fight for democratic governance. He noted that while Nigeria has made significant progress since the return to civilian rule in 1999, more work remains to be done.

“Since 1999, we have taken meaningful strides in democratic development, even as we face new and persistent challenges,” he said.

Acknowledging the current economic and security difficulties facing the country, Sani expressed optimism that these problems can be overcome through national unity, resilience, and determination.

He also highlighted his administration’s commitment to deepening democracy in Kaduna State by adopting an inclusive, transparent, and consultative approach to governance.

Governor Sani concluded by urging all Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending democratic values and working together to ensure lasting peace, stability, and progress for the nation.
