Makinde declares presidential ambition, seeks Methodist Church’s backing

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has publicly declared his intention to contest for the presidency, promising to offer leadership focused on national unity, service and improving the lives of Nigerians if elected.

Makinde made the declaration on Wednesday while opening the 50th/15th Biennial Conference of the Methodist Church Nigeria in Ibadan, where he also appealed to the church to support his presidential bid.

“It is no secret that I am running to be the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and this is the type of leadership I will offer if I am given the opportunity to serve Nigeria,” the governor told delegates.

He urged members of the Methodist Church to back his ambition, expressing optimism that Nigeria could achieve greater progress under committed leadership.

“I use this opportunity to solicit your support, and I am confident that with faith in God and commitment from all of us, our best days as a nation are still ahead,” he said.

Makinde said Nigeria required leaders capable of uniting the country around a shared vision and prioritising the welfare of citizens over personal interests.

According to him, leadership should be measured by the impact it has on people’s lives rather than campaign promises.

“Leadership is not about privilege; it is about responsibility. It is measured not by the promises we make, but by the lives we improve,” he said.

The governor maintained that although government has a responsibility to provide infrastructure, security, healthcare and sound policies, sustainable nation-building also depends on integrity, compassion and shared values.

He further called on political leaders to focus on improving the living conditions of Nigerians instead of being consumed by electoral contests, insisting that the country possesses the human and natural resources needed to prosper under purposeful leadership.

Makinde also commended the Methodist Church Nigeria for its contributions to education, healthcare, moral development and national growth, describing the church as a critical institution that has continued to shape values and inspire hope across the country.

He praised the church’s readiness to speak on national issues, saying faith-based organisations remain indispensable partners in Nigeria’s development.
