The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Kaduna State has raised concerns over a possible food crisis, citing worsening insecurity and the escalating cost of fertiliser as major threats to agricultural production ahead of the planting season.
The association’s state chairman, Nuhu Aminu, told journalists that farmers in several local government areas can no longer safely access their farmlands due to persistent attacks by bandits and kidnappers.
He listed affected areas as Giwa, Kauru, Kubau, Kudan, Kajuru, Sanga, and Kachia, noting that these communities have become increasingly unsafe for farming activities.
Aminu said the security situation has forced many farmers to abandon their fields, warning that continued attacks could significantly reduce food output in the state.
According to him, fear and repeated violence in rural communities have weakened farmers’ confidence and disrupted preparations for the new farming season.
He also highlighted the sharp increase in fertiliser prices, describing it as another major setback for smallholder farmers who form the backbone of Kaduna’s agricultural sector.
While AFAN is encouraging the use of organic fertilisers as an alternative, he noted that many farmers still struggle to afford or access adequate inputs.
The association urged federal, state, and local governments to urgently intervene by subsidising fertiliser and ensuring timely distribution of farm inputs.
Aminu further called for stronger government support for agriculture, stressing its importance to food security and the broader economy.
