Kano college launches 800-tree drive to tackle climate challenges

The Kano State Government has launched an initiative to plant 800 trees at the Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and climate resilience.

The “Make AKCILS Green” initiative was launched on Monday by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahir Hashim.

The project is being implemented by the college’s Agricultural Science Department in collaboration with the state Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change.

Hashim said the tree-planting exercise was designed to create a greener campus while encouraging students to take greater responsibility for protecting the environment.

“This is a practical step towards creating a greener campus and promoting environmental responsibility among students,” he said.

The commissioner urged schools, tertiary institutions, government agencies, businesses and individuals across Kano to incorporate tree planting and environmental protection into their activities.

He commended the college for turning environmental awareness into practical action, describing the initiative as a model that other institutions could replicate.

Hashim also said the college had submitted requests for interventions from the ministry, adding that the government had accepted the requests and commenced action on them.

The Acting Provost of the college, Dr Ali Tamasi Mu’az, was also said to have commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration for its environmental and climate-related initiatives.

Hashim said sustained tree planting was essential to improving environmental quality and strengthening Kano’s ability to cope with climate-related challenges.

He added that expanding green spaces across institutions and communities would contribute to a healthier and more climate-resilient state.
