Kano introduces electric cargo tricycles to empower women farmers

The Kano State Government has launched electric cargo tricycles to support women farmers in transporting agricultural produce while promoting clean energy and environmental sustainability.

The initiative, spearheaded by Mata Zallah Entrepreneurs with support from Prompcom+ under the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), was officially flagged off by Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, at the Mata Zallah Smart Agro-Cargo Base Station in Rugar Gundutse, Karfi Junction, Kura Local Government Area.

Dr. Hashim praised the women-led organization for introducing an innovation that combines technology, environmental protection, and women’s economic empowerment.

“This project not only improves the livelihoods of women but also reduces environmental pollution and post-harvest losses.

“It reflects how innovation can drive sustainable economic growth while safeguarding our environment,” he said.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the initiative and noted that it aligns with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s vision of empowering women and promoting a green, sustainable Kano.

The electric tricycles will allow women farmers and agro-entrepreneurs to transport produce efficiently without relying on petrol or diesel vehicles, lowering both greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs.

The Mata Zallah Smart Agro-Cargo Base also serves as a hub for training and logistics management, aiming to expand women’s participation in agribusiness and climate-smart innovation in rural communities.

Event stakeholders praised the collaboration between local innovators and international development partners, describing it as a model for combining economic resilience with climate action in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
