Kano PDP tussle: Court clears Sagagi’s delegates for primaries

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has upheld that national delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elected by the Sagagi-led faction as genuine and legitimate to participate in the forthcoming PDP presidential primary election.

The PDP faction headed by Shehu Wada Sagagi elected national delegates on May 10 in the entire local government areas of Kano State.

However, the PDP national Secretariat recognised the delegates compiled by the other faction led by Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, PDP Deputy National Chairman, North West.

This has since been a fierce legal battle between the Sagagi-led state executives and a faction of the party led by Gwarzo.

Sagagi won a legal tussle as the authentic chairman but the national headquarters of the PDP favours the Gwarzo’s faction because of Sagagi’s alleged loyalty to the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Not recognising the list of the national delegates amounts to deny the delegates the right to participate in the primaries.

Two of the delegates earlier not recognised by the party Jamilu Garo and Alto Yau on behalf of other delegates instituted a litigation against the PDP, National Chairman, National Secretary, Organising Secretary and Independent National Electoral Commission (NEC) to ensure their inclusion as the rightful delegates from Kano State.

Delivering judgement on Friday, Justice A.M. Liman ordered the PDP National Secretariat to recognise the delegates in the forthcoming presidential primary election slated for May 28, 2022.
