Kano signs ₦21.29bn contracts to rehabilitate major water facilities

The Kano State Government has signed contracts worth ₦21.29 billion for the rehabilitation of two key water treatment plants in a major effort to improve access to clean and reliable water supply across the state.

The projects cover the overhaul of the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants, alongside the restoration of associated pump stations and reservoirs, facilities considered critical to water distribution in Kano metropolis and surrounding communities.

The contracts were signed on Wednesday, May 7, 2026, at the headquarters of the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources by the Acting Commissioner, Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, alongside representatives of the contracting firms, CGC Nigeria Limited and CCECC Nigeria Limited.

Under the agreement, CGC Nigeria Limited will handle the ₦9.9 billion rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and its raw water pump station, while CCECC Nigeria Limited will execute the ₦11.39 billion upgrade of the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station and Water Treatment Plant, as well as the restoration of the Goron Dutse reservoirs.

The state government had earlier approved the projects during an Executive Council meeting in April 2026, following concerns over ageing infrastructure and inconsistent water supply in parts of the state.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, the intervention is aimed at revitalising the water distribution system and addressing long-standing challenges affecting potable water access for residents.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Hashim expressed confidence in the technical capacity of the contractors, urging them to adhere strictly to specifications and deliver within the stipulated eight-month timeframe.

He said the rehabilitation works represent a key milestone in the administration’s broader agenda to strengthen public utilities and improve service delivery, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas that rely heavily on the affected water facilities.

The ministry added that the upgraded systems are expected to significantly boost water production capacity and improve distribution efficiency once completed.

Representatives of both CGC Nigeria Limited and CCECC Nigeria Limited assured the government of their commitment to delivering quality work within schedule, noting their readiness to commence implementation immediately.

The Ministry also pledged strict supervision and monitoring of the projects to ensure transparency, accountability, and timely completion.

Officials say the intervention is expected to ease water shortages in Kano and improve living conditions for millions of residents who depend on the state’s water infrastructure.
