Kogi govt suspends Echane festival over rising insecurity

The Kogi State Government has suspended the Echane Festival in Ebiraland with immediate effect over security concerns.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, announced this via a statement issued on Monday, June 1, 2026.

The government cited credible security intelligence that activities tied to the festival could threaten public peace and lead to a breakdown of law and order in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.

Fanwo stated: “Credible intelligence reports indicated that activities associated with the festival could threaten public safety and potentially destabilise affected communities.

“Governor Ahmed Ododo approved the suspension in the interest of maintaining peace and public safety.”

While reaffirming respect for cultural heritage and the role of traditional festivals, the commissioner stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the government’s foremost responsibility.

“All security agencies in the state have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the suspension order,” he said.

Fanwo warned that anyone found promoting activities connected to the suspended festival would face the full weight of the law.

Fanwo reaffirmed the Kogi State Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, noting that it will continue to take proactive measures to sustain the peace and stability in the state.

The commissioner called on traditional rulers, community leaders, opinion leaders, youth groups m, and residents of affected communities to cooperate with security agencies and support efforts aimed at maintaining peace and harmony.

Echane Festival is a major annual masquerade celebration in Ebiraland in Kogi State.

It is across various districts – including Ihima, Okene, Adavi, and Eika – usually between April and June. The festival features vibrant masquerade (Eku) displays, traditional music, and communal dancing.
