Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq
The Kwara State Government has ordered the closure of schools in four Local Government Areas, following rising insecurity in the state.
The affected LGAs are Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti.
The closure of the schools comes after gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Euku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing three worshippers and abducted many others.
The Kwara State Commissioner for Education, Lawal Olohungbebe, confirmed the development via a statement issued on Thursday, November 20, 2025.
“The Kwara State Government is determined to curtail the activities of kidnappers who may want to use schoolchildren as human shields,” Olohungbebe stated.

The commissioner added that the school closures would remain in place until security agencies give clearance for normal activities to resume.
The Chairman of the Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Yusuf Agboola, in a circular issued on Wednesday, said the union was acting strictly on instructions from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development after the government raised concerns over fresh security threats in Kwara South.
Agboola stated: “Comrade chairmen, this is to inform you and through you, all schools in the above local governments of the instruction to close down all schools with immediate effect until further notice.
“This decision was occasioned by the security challenges ravaging the area and the efforts of the government to control the situation. Treat this information as important and with the urgency it deserves, as it emanated from the ministry.”
Nigeria has witnessed a spate of attacks by gunmen, including the kidnapping on Monday of 25 schoolgirls from a boarding school in Kebbi State, putting a spotlight on insecurity and forcing President Bola Tinubu to postpone foreign trips.
