Lagos prosecutes over 100 suspects for public disorder

More than 100 suspects have been arraigned before the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi over alleged breaches of public peace and other offences in parts of Victoria Island, Lekki and Ajah.

The suspects were brought before the court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, following their arrest during an overnight operation along the Victoria Island-Lekki-Ajah axis.

The Lagos State Government, in a statement issued on Monday through its official social media handles, said the defendants were arrested between 2am and 4am on Friday, September 4, 2026.

The prosecution, led by Oluwabusola Omotunde on behalf of the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, told the court that the suspects were facing charges including breach of peace and unlawful conversion of government property for personal use.

Some of the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges, while others entered pleas of not guilty.

Delivering rulings on the cases, the Chief Magistrate of the Mobile Court, F.J. Adefioye, stressed the importance of deterrence while ensuring that the defendants’ rights to due process were respected.

The court sentenced those who pleaded guilty to Counts I and II to one month and two months of community service or imprisonment, respectively. The sentences are to run consecutively.

Defendants who pleaded not guilty were remanded in custody and granted bail subject to the provision of two sureties each.

The Coordinator of the Mobile Court, Olufemi Adekunle, said the state government remained committed to enforcing law and order while protecting residents and legitimate businesses.

He said the court would continue to sit in different parts of Lagos to ensure swift prosecution of offenders.

“Similar Mobile Court sittings will continue across the state to ensure that offenders are prosecuted promptly and that public spaces remain safe for all,” Adekunle said.

The Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court handles cases involving public order, environmental violations, traffic offences and other related matters as part of the state’s enforcement efforts.
