Lampard’s Coventry City seal Premier League return after 25 years, earn $275m revenue

Former Chelsea manager and midfielder Frank Lampard has revived his managerial reputation after steering Coventry City to promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years.

The Sky Blues secured their return on Friday following a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, prompting jubilant celebrations among players, coaching staff, and around 7,500 travelling Coventry supporters.

The moment marked a major turnaround for Lampard, who has faced scrutiny throughout his managerial career.

The former Chelsea midfielder became emotional after the final whistle, describing the achievement as a personal redemption.

Lampard said he has always been motivated by the need to prove doubters wrong, adding that the promotion represented a reward for persistence and resilience.

“Everything I’ve ever done in my career has been a point to prove to be honest. It’s been in me since I was a young player. You are always fighting against something,” he said.

Coventry’s return to England’s top flight ends decades of struggle following their relegation in 2001.

The club’s decline saw them drop as far as the fourth tier in 2017 and spend three seasons playing home matches away from their stadium due to ownership disputes.

Lampard’s appointment in November 2024 was initially viewed as a risky move by supporters, given his mixed managerial record.

However, club owner Doug King backed the decision, believing Lampard’s experience in the EFL Championship would prove valuable after the dismissal of long-serving manager Mark Robins.

That gamble has paid off, with promotion expected to deliver an estimated £200 million ($275 million) in additional revenue for the club.

Lampard, who enjoyed a decorated playing career, won 11 major trophies with Chelsea and remains the club’s all-time leading scorer with 211 goals.
