LAWMA clears encroachment on Lagos-Badagry Expressway

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority has cleared illegal structures and activities along the Alaba Rago setback on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway as part of ongoing environmental enforcement efforts.

The agency’s Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday, noting that the operation targeted illegal traders, squatters and unauthorised structures occupying the corridor.

Gbadegesin said the action reflects the Lagos State Government’s zero tolerance for environmental violations, particularly indiscriminate waste disposal and obstruction of sanitation operations.

According to him, the exercise became necessary due to persistent encroachment on the expressway setback, which hindered waste management activities and contributed to environmental degradation in the area.

He explained that the clearance is aimed at restoring order, improving sanitation standards and protecting critical public infrastructure along one of the state’s busiest transport routes.

“Road setbacks are not designated for trading or habitation. Continued encroachment on such public spaces will not be tolerated,” he said.

The LAWMA boss added that the government would sustain enforcement efforts to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and discourage practices that undermine structured waste management.

He also urged traders and residents to relocate to approved market spaces and make use of designated waste disposal channels.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, following the expiration of a three-day removal notice issued to occupants of the area.

Gbadegesin further disclosed that several carts used by illegal waste handlers were seized during the exercise as part of measures to curb indiscriminate dumping and strengthen sanitation enforcement.

Alaba Rago, a major market located in Ojo, Lagos, is known as a key hub for livestock and food trade and is currently undergoing redevelopment by the state government.
