Makinde blames frequent political defections on lack of ideology

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said that the frequent defection of Nigerian politicians from one political party to another is a reflection of the absence of clear political ideology in the country’s political landscape.

The governor made the observation on Thursday during the public presentation of a book titled “Omituntun’s Political Ideology of Governor Seyi Makinde,” held at the State Local Government Staff Training School Hall, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Chief Press Secretary, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Makinde noted that political parties in Nigeria lack distinct ideological identities, making it easy for politicians to switch allegiances for personal or opportunistic reasons.

“One of the things that troubles our politics is the absence of ideology. All our parties are almost the same, which is why politicians easily move from one to another.

“At night, it is ABC, in the morning SDP, and by afternoon ADC — because there is no ideology,” he said.

According to him, his administration’s “Omituntun” mantra is not just a slogan but a reflection of the tangible transformation taking place in Oyo State.

“If you live in this state, you would know that Oyo has taken on a new look.

“Omituntun is not just a slogan; it is the reality people live in,” he added.

Makinde stressed that his approach to governance is guided by a clear vision and consistency of purpose, describing ideology as the compass that makes leadership predictable and accountable.

“You know what to expect from Republicans in the US, and from Democrats.

“But in Nigeria, what can you expect from a typical politician? That’s what we are trying to change — politics should not be for power’s sake, but for impact and the good of the people,” he said.

In his review of the book, the author, Wale Adewumi, described Makinde as a pragmatic and transformational leader whose governance philosophy embodies integrity, service, and unity.

“The book doesn’t just document policies; it captures the spirit of a leader who governs with purpose. It serves as a mirror and a guide for future generations,” Adewumi stated.

Other dignitaries at the event, including veteran broadcaster and diplomat Dr. Yemi Farounbi, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, and the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abdul-Ganiy Agbotomokekere, commended Makinde for his inclusive leadership and strides in education, interfaith harmony, and socioeconomic development.
