Makinde: Why PDP govs, others are defecting

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has identified the lack of a party ideological foundation as the reason behind the frequent defections by Nigerian politicians.

Makinde said this while speaking at the public presentation of a book titled ‘Omituntun’s Political Ideology of Seyi Makinde’ in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Thursday, October 23, 2025.

Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including governors and lawmakers, recently dumped the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defectors hinged their decisions on the internal crisis rocking the PDP.

However, the governor, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, maintained that the situation had become a major problem that shouldn’t be ignored.

Makinde, claiming that his political style was distinct, said his actions, policies, and governance style had evolved over the years to become easily recognisable and impactful.

“It’s not politics for the sake of power, but politics for impact. It’s governance for the good of the people,” Makinde stated.

The chairman of the occasion, Dr Yemi Farounbi, lauded Makinde’s visionary leadership style, describing him as “a rare breed of a leader who is committed to public service”.

The book reviewer, Wale Adewumi, added that the publication reflects the heart of a transformational leader and serves as both a mirror and a guide for future generations.
