The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man, Manaseh Bitrus Jatau, over the alleged killing of his girlfriend, Rebecca Ojonike Jeremiah, following an argument reportedly triggered by a phone call from another woman.
Jeremiah’s lifeless body was discovered along Mai Angwa Street in Romi, Kaduna, around 7am on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
The command’s spokesperson, Mansir Hassan, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, saying preliminary investigations had linked Jatau to the woman’s death and an alleged attempt to conceal her body.
According to Hassan, the discovery was reported by the Officer-in-Charge of the Romi Outstation, prompting detectives to visit the scene.
“The lifeless body of the deceased was sighted along Mai Angwa Street, Romi, with cotton wool stuffed in her nose,” he said.
Hassan said Jeremiah was taken to St Gerald Hospital, Kakuri, where a doctor confirmed her death. Her remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The police spokesperson said preliminary investigations established that Jatau was the last person known to have contacted Jeremiah and had invited her to meet him at Ebano Joint, Romi.
Detectives later traced the suspect to his workplace at Tomato Jos Company in the Maraban Jos area of Kaduna, where he was arrested.
During interrogation, Jatau allegedly admitted that he had an altercation with Jeremiah in his room after receiving a phone call from another woman.
The police said the confrontation allegedly resulted in Jeremiah’s death.
Jatau also allegedly told investigators that he dumped her body in an open field near his residence in an attempt to conceal the incident.
“He further confessed to have dumped the body in an open field close to his house in an attempt to conceal the crime,” Hassan said.
The suspect remains in police custody as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Jeremiah’s death.
The command said Jatau would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, condemned violence and urged residents to resolve disputes peacefully.
Muhammad assured the public that the command would pursue justice for Jeremiah and ensure that anyone found responsible for her death was held accountable.
He also appealed to residents to provide useful information to security agencies to help prevent violent crimes across the state.
