The mother of popular Nigerian singer Mayorkun has shared how a cover video posted online unexpectedly transformed her son’s life and music career.
Speaking on the podcast Talk with B, she said neither she nor other family members anticipated that Mayorkun’s rendition of a song by Davido would attract the attention of the award-winning artiste.
According to her, Mayorkun had visited his cousin in Lekki and recorded a cover of Davido’s song, Money, in a music room before sharing it on social media.
She said the video quickly went viral and eventually reached Davido, who contacted the singer.
The singer’s mother revealed that the family was initially skeptical about the message, suspecting it might be a scam. However, Mayorkun’s brother, Ayobami, insisted that the message was genuine.
She recalled that after confirming Davido’s identity through his voice, the family became excited. Davido reportedly praised the cover and requested Mayorkun’s measurements before sending him a box of gifts.
According to her, Davido later invited Mayorkun to record music with him, a collaboration that produced the hit song Eleko and launched the singer into the limelight.
She added that the success of Eleko changed Mayorkun’s life almost overnight, with residents of their Ajah neighbourhood affectionately nicknaming the family “Oriyami Eleko.”
The revelation has since sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians commending Davido for supporting emerging talents and helping to shape Mayorkun’s successful music career.
