Mojisola Meranda was on Monday, January 13, 2025, elected as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
This followed the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as the Speaker of the House.
The lawmakers impeached Obasa (APC-Agege I), a sixth term lawmaker, at an emergency plenary at the Assembly complex in the Ikeja area of Lagos State on Monday.
The Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, was also suspended indefinitely, while the Chief Whip of the House, Mojeed Fatai, was elected the new Deputy Speaker.
Lagos lawmakers impeach Obasa as Speaker
Meranda, who took her oath of office immediately Obasa was impeached, represents Apapa Constituency 1 under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
She is also a former Chief Whip of the House.
52-year-old Obasa has been Speaker of the House since 2015.
The lawmakers accused Obasa of multiple statutory and financial infractions involving over N40 billion.
Security officials have however taken over the premises of the Assembly complex to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
