MTN announces temporary service outage in Kano, Borno

MTN Nigeria has announced a planned network maintenance exercise that will cause temporary service interruptions across parts of Adamawa, Borno, and Kano states this weekend.

The exercise, scheduled for Saturday, August 24, 2025, between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., is aimed at restoring damaged fiber infrastructure along the AFCOT–Bawo Village route in Adamawa. The process will involve switching traffic to a newly installed fiber span to improve long-term network stability.

MTN said the downtime will affect 101 sites across 15 Local Government Areas, impacting 2G, 3G, 4G, and enterprise services. The affected areas include Nasarawa LGA in Kano; Girei, Song, Mubi North, Hong, Gombi, Fufore, Mubi South, Madagali, Michika, Maiha, Chibok, and Yola North in Adamawa; as well as Askira/Uba and Shani in Borno State.

The company explained that the route’s linear and unprotected structure makes the temporary downtime unavoidable, with the work being conducted during daylight hours for security reasons.

“MTN regrets any inconvenience this may cause and appreciates the understanding of its valued customers as it works to enhance service quality and reliability,” the operator said in a statement.

The maintenance is part of MTN’s wider investment drive to boost network resilience in Nigeria’s Northeast, a region frequently hampered by infrastructure challenges and security concerns.
