Naira starts 2026 strong, gains ₦4.90 at official market

The Naira began 2026 on a positive note on Friday, strengthening against the U.S. dollar at the official market to close at ₦1,430.84 per dollar.

Figures posted on the Central Bank of Nigeria’s official platform show that the currency appreciated by ₦4.90, representing a 0.34 per cent gain compared to the December 31, 2025 rate of ₦1,435.75 per dollar.

The latest performance continues the naira’s steady appreciation seen during the festive season and into the new year.
