The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has suspended veteran journalist, Mr. Steve Osuji, for one year over a violation of its Code of Ethics.
In a joint statement signed by NGE President, Mr. Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild said Osuji breached an “off-the-record” agreement regarding a keynote address delivered by the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, during the 25th Biennial National Convention held in Enugu.
Despite a clear understanding that the speech was not for public dissemination, Osuji reportedly shared content from the address on his social media platforms.
“The Guild considers this a serious breach of professional ethics and has suspended Mr. Osuji for one year, effective immediately,” the statement read.
The NGE apologised to the SSS Director-General and the agency for the embarrassment caused and reiterated its commitment to ethical journalism. It noted that Mr. Osuji reserves the right to appeal the disciplinary action.
The Guild emphasized its continued dedication to promoting professionalism and maintaining public trust in the media.
