Nigeria-South Africa trade hits N1.34trn in first half of 2026

Trade between Nigeria and South Africa rose to N1.34 trillion in the first half of 2026, exceeding the total value recorded between both countries in the whole of 2022.

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), as compiled by TheCableIndex, showed that the latest half-year figure represents a significant increase from the N594.84 billion recorded for the entire 2022.

Nigeria’s trade with South Africa stood at N952.24 billion in 2020 before falling to N623.86 billion in 2021 and N594.84 billion in 2022.

The trade value, however, climbed sharply to N1.30 trillion in 2023 and more than doubled to N2.83 trillion in 2024.

In 2025, bilateral trade stood at N2.52 trillion, while transactions between the two countries reached N1.34 trillion in just the first six months of 2026.

The latest figure suggests that trade between the two major African economies remains on a strong trajectory, although the full-year 2026 value will depend on activity recorded in the second half of the year.

The data highlights the changing pattern of Nigeria-South Africa economic relations, with bilateral trade recording substantial growth since 2023.

The N1.34 trillion recorded in H1 2026 is also more than twice the N594.84 billion recorded in 2022, underscoring the significant expansion in trade value over the period.
