Nigerian Breweries advocates policy stability, stronger governance to boost Nigeria’s economic growth

Nigerian Breweries Plc has stressed the need for strong corporate governance and consistent industrial policies to drive Nigeria’s long-term economic growth and competitiveness.

The Board Chair of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Juliet Anammah, made the call while delivering the keynote address at the 2026 National Corporate Governance Summit held recently in Lagos.

Anammah urged policymakers to implement stable industrial policies that would enable businesses to move up the value chain and produce higher-value goods.

Citing Nigerian Breweries as an example, Anammah said the right policy environment could support the company’s expansion beyond brewing into products that serve industries such as pharmaceuticals and aerospace.

According to her, industrial policies must be sustained beyond political administrations if Nigeria is to build globally competitive industries.

She noted that long-term policy consistency would boost investor confidence, strengthen industrial capacity and support the country’s ambition of attaining upper-middle-income status.

“Government must be willing to support these industries with good governance, thereby allowing them to move from the first level of where they are in terms of the types of products they’re producing to a much more complex level of products that make our economic cycle and the engine of the economy much more complex. From there, you can get value-added products that you can export to get foreign exchange,” the Nigerian Breweries boss said.

Anammah also emphasised that effective corporate governance is essential for creating a business environment that attracts investment, promotes innovation and delivers sustainable economic development.

Other speakers at the summit echoed similar views, highlighting the role of sound governance in strengthening Nigeria’s economic future.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by the Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, Dr. Tope Fasua; the President and Chairman of the Institute of Directors Centre for Corporate Governance, Urum Eke; and the Chairman of the National Corporate Governance Summit, Abba Kyari Bukar, all stressed that strong corporate governance remains critical to achieving Nigeria’s goal of building a resilient and competitive $1 trillion economy.
