NiMet forecasts 3-day sunshine, haze, thunderstorm in Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted sunshine and haziness across the country from Monday to Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

NiMet made this known via its weather outlook released on Sunday, January 19.

The agency predicted sunny skies with hazy conditions in the northern region on Monday.

NiMet also anticipated hazy skies with patches of clouds in the North-Central region, with chances of rain showers in parts of Abuja, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Benue States in the afternoon and evening.

For the inland and coastal regions of the South, NiMet predicted a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine.

The agency said: “Morning thunderstorms are expected in parts of Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

“Thunderstorms are also likely later in the day in parts of Ogun, Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States.”

On Tuesday, NiMet forecast similar conditions in the northern region, with sunny skies in a hazy atmosphere.

It added: “The North-Central region will likely experience hazy skies with some cloud coverage, and rain showers may occur in parts of Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and Benue States in the afternoon.

“In the southern region, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected.

“Thunderstorms are forecasted over various southern states later in the day, similar to Monday’s forecast.”

For Wednesday, NiMet predicted slight dust haze over the northern region, with sunny skies and hazy conditions in most parts of the North-Central.

Kogi, Benue, and Kwara States are expected to experience some cloud coverage.

“In the inland and coastal regions, a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine is expected, with thunderstorms in parts of Delta, Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States during the afternoon and evening,” the agency said.

NiMet urged the public to take necessary precautions as dust particles were suspended in the air.

It advised people with respiratory conditions, such as asthma, to be cautious.

The agency also warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms and urged the public to follow safety advisories from relevant authorities.

NiMet stated: “Airline operators have been advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning.

“Residents are encouraged to stay informed through weather updates on NiMet’s official website.”
