NNPP asks INEC to halt elections over logo dispute

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to suspend all elections until the party’s “authentic” logo is restored on ballot papers.

This demand was contained in a letter dated August 25, 2025, addressed to the INEC Chairman and signed by the party’s counsel, Mr. Ndubuisi Ukpai.

The letter, released to the media on Wednesday in Lagos, referenced an ongoing suit at the Federal Capital Territory High Court challenging INEC’s recognition of a rival faction.

Ukpai, writing on behalf of the party’s leadership under National Chairman Dr. Major Agbo, accused INEC of disregarding subsisting court judgments affirming Agbo’s leadership.

He noted that the court had on August 15 granted leave for NNPP to file an application for an order of mandamus compelling INEC to comply with those rulings.

The party warned INEC to maintain the status quo pending judicial review of the matter.

Citing the 1986 Supreme Court case Governor of Lagos State v. Ojukwu, the letter stressed that no institution is allowed to preempt court decisions or undermine pending cases.

NNPP also demanded that INEC stop granting recognition to the expelled members led by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, who, it claimed, were planning to hold a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on August 28.

The party insisted such a gathering would be “unlawful, null, and void” and warned INEC against attending or monitoring it.

The letter further reminded the commission of its constitutional duty under Section 287(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to enforce and give effect to court decisions.

“This correspondence is issued to place the commission on the path of legality and forestall the necessity of further legal recourse,” the party stated, urging INEC to act with “institutional circumspection and fidelity to the rule of law.”
