Nollywood producer Kayode Peters dies in Canada

Veteran Nollywood producer and actor Kayode Peters has passed away in Canada, according to multiple sources.

While the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, the news was confirmed by close associate and comedian Steve Onu, popularly known as Yaw. In a statement to Peoples Gazette on Friday, Yaw said, “Yes, he is,” in response to inquiries about Peters’ passing. He added that he is still trying to reach Peters’ brother for more details.

The founder of Best of Nollywood Awards, Seun Oloketuyi, also confirmed the news via Instagram on Saturday, writing: “Bad News emerging from Canada indicates Filmmaker Kayode Peters is dead.”

A graduate of English from the University of Lagos, Peters launched his career in entertainment in 2000 with the production of The Twilight Zone. He gained prominence through his work on African Magic’s revival of My Flatmates, Papa Ajasco & Company, and later worked as executive producer and director on acclaimed films such as Crazy Grannies and Dream Job (both in 2021).

In 2018, he produced his first international project, Excuse My African, shot in New York City.

Peters was also celebrated for his contributions to stage plays and television sitcoms, including Extended Family and the 2015 drama Doll House. Over the years, he built a reputation as a trailblazer in Nigerian theatre and television, credited with nurturing the talents of many actors and comedians.

His sudden death marks a major loss to the Nollywood and theatre community.
