NRS urges Kano taxpayers to embrace digital tax system

The Nigeria Revenue Service has urged taxpayers in Kano State to embrace ongoing tax reforms and digital platforms, saying wider compliance will strengthen the country’s revenue base and support economic growth.

The Service made the call on Thursday at the Kano Town Hall Meeting for Medium and Emerging Taxpayers held at Fabs Event Centre, Kano.

The meeting, themed, “Tax Reform, Rev360 and E-Invoicing: Shaping the Future of Compliance for Medium and Emerging Taxpayers,” brought together NRS officials, business owners, taxpayers, professional bodies and private-sector representatives.

The Executive Chairman of the NRS, Dr Zacch Adedeji, was represented at the meeting by the Group Director-Government Business, Wande Akinpelu.

Akinpelu said the tax reforms were aimed at making compliance simpler, more transparent and predictable for businesses.

He said the Service was engaging taxpayers to explain the changes while also obtaining firsthand information on the challenges they encounter.

“This Town Hall is not intended to be a one-way conversation. We want to explain what is changing, but just as importantly, we want to hear directly from you about what these changes mean for your businesses,” he said.

According to him, the experience of taxpayers should influence the implementation of the reforms.

“We want to know where the difficulties are. We want to understand what needs clarification and what can be improved,” he added.

Akinpelu said Kano remained an important commercial hub whose markets, industries and trading networks contribute significantly to the Nigerian economy.

He particularly highlighted the importance of medium and emerging taxpayers, saying the growth of businesses in the category would create jobs, attract investment, expand markets and ultimately increase the country’s tax base.

He said the government could achieve sustainable revenue growth by creating an environment where businesses could expand rather than relying mainly on increased pressure on existing taxpayers.

On the digital reforms, Akinpelu said Rev360 was designed to make registration, filing, payment and interaction with the tax authority easier for taxpayers.

He also said E-Invoicing would improve the quality and accuracy of transaction information, reduce disputes and promote more efficient tax administration.

“The real test is whether it makes compliance easier for the taxpayer,” he said.

“It should reduce paperwork, save time, improve certainty, and make dealings with the Service more efficient.”

He urged taxpayers to use the forum to raise concerns and seek clarification on the reforms.

“Ask the difficult questions. Tell us where you are encountering problems. Share what is working well and what is not,” Akinpelu said.

“We would rather hear those concerns directly and address them than assume from Abuja that everything is working as intended.”

Meanwhile, taxpayers at the meeting expressed their commitment to meeting their tax obligations and supporting economic development in Kano.

Danny Joshi, representing Aspira Nigeria Limited, said the company was committed to timely tax filing and payment.

“We are playing important role in Kano to satisfy customers. We are always ready to file our tax to develop Kano economy and financially,” he said.

Joshi said timely payment of taxes would help strengthen government revenue and increase the capacity to finance development.

Also speaking, Najashi Ismail Abdallah of Gerawa Group of Companies said the company had experienced no major difficulty with the tax system.

“Everything is smoothly, we always pay tax timely, the system is smooth and no challenge,” he said.

Abdallah added that the company had migrated from TaxPro Max to the Rev360 platform.

The Group Director, Emerging Taxpayers Group, NRS, Olufemi Oyebanji, said the town hall was designed to deepen engagement between the Service and taxpayers.

Oyebanji said the meeting would help taxpayers understand what had changed, what was changing and what was expected of them under the new system.

“We want to engage with our taxpayers to let them know what has changed and what is changing and the expectation,” he said.

He added that the Service also wanted to understand taxpayers’ challenges and concerns to help them meet their responsibilities.

Rev360 was launched by the NRS on April 30, 2026, as the digital tax administration platform replacing TaxPro Max.

The platform forms part of the Service’s efforts to modernise tax administration, improve reporting and make interactions between taxpayers and the revenue authority more efficient.

The NRS said it would continue to prioritise taxpayer education, simplified processes, digital solutions and direct engagement with businesses as the tax reforms are implemented.

The meeting was formally declared open by Akinpelu on behalf of the NRS chairman, with participants urged to use the engagement to clarify issues, identify implementation challenges and strengthen cooperation between taxpayers and the Service.
