NSCDC launches Agro Rangers base to protect Gombe’s agricultural assets

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Gombe State Command, has inaugurated a newly constructed Agro Rangers operational base at the Kanawa Forest Reserve in Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area.

The facility, unveiled on Monday, is aimed at strengthening the protection of critical agricultural assets and tackling herder–farmer conflicts in the state.

The Agro Rangers Unit, established by the NSCDC, is tasked with securing farmlands, ranches, silos, and forest reserves, as well as mediating disputes to promote food security and national stability.

The new base—equipped with residential accommodation, a solar power system, and a motorised borehole—was built by the Gombe State Government with support from the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACRESAL) Project.

According to a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Buhari Saad, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance security in agrarian communities.

Speaking at the event, the State Commandant, Jibrin Idris, described the project as a strategic intervention designed to safeguard agro-allied investments and improve security across the area.

He said the establishment of the base aligns with directives from the Commandant General, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, adding that Agro Rangers personnel would enforce zero tolerance for encroachment, illegal logging, and farmer-herder clashes within the corridor.

Idris noted that the facility would serve as a forward operating base, ensuring round-the-clock security for the Kwadon community and the Kanawa Forest Biosphere and Botanical Garden.

“We are committed to protecting lives, livelihoods, and the green economy of Gombe State,” he said.

He also commended Muhammadu Yahaya for his support and praised the ACRESAL State Project Coordinator, Dr Sani Jauro, for efforts toward strengthening environmental and agricultural resilience.

As part of the inauguration, two operational motorcycles donated by ACRESAL were handed over to enhance patrol and rapid response capabilities in the area.

The commandant further urged residents of host communities to cooperate with security personnel and embrace peaceful dispute resolution mechanisms.

He encouraged communities to take advantage of the Corps’ Alternative Dispute Resolution channels to address agrarian conflicts amicably.
