NURTW official beats dispatch rider to death in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death in the state.

Eyewitnesses disclosed that a disagreement broke out between Adio and the dispatch rider on Wednesday after the rider allegedly scratched Adio’s vehicle on Tapa Street, Lagos Island.

The confrontation reportedly escalated when Adio, joined by his colleagues, attacked the victim.

A journalist, Chris Nwandu, who shared a video of the incident on Facebook on Thursday, September 18, 2025, stated that Adio was notorious for attacking road users in the area, including tricycle operators.

“A popular Lagos Island NURTW top official by the name Shamsideen Adio mercilessly beat a dispatch rider to a pulp on Wednesday in Tapa Street, Lagos Island, for obstructing his way while driving on the road. He was joined by his friends and colleagues, battering the poor guy as they liked,” Nwandu wrote.

A police officer familiar with the case confirmed that the victim died from injuries sustained during the beating.

The officer told PUNCH that Adio was subsequently arrested.

Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, for an official comment were unsuccessful as her phone number was unreachable at the time of filing this report.
