OAU students protest tuition hike, shut varsity gate

Scores of the students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, shut the institution’s main gate to restrict vehicular movement in protest of the recent increment in tuition fees.

The OAU management had adjusted the fees that students of the institution would pay for the new academic session.

The university management, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, on September 13, 2023, said the decision was taken by the university Senate at its emergency meeting held on September 12.

The institution later reduced the fees that students of the institution would pay for the new academic session.

Olarewaju, who made this known in a statement issued on September 25, noted that the decision followed a meeting the university management had with the leadership of the students union.

He said the meeting which lasted for several hours was called by the OAU management, after several agitations by the students union for a reduction of the initial charges approved by the university.

He stated that the students’ union leaders were adamant that the charges be reduced by 50 per cent, but the OAU management made it clear that the new charges were the minimum the university required to run efficiently.
