The ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, on Thursday, February 27, 2025, stormed the Assembly complex in the Ikeja area of the state.
Obasa, who was impeached by his colleagues over fraud allegations, arrived the legislative building at about 12 noon and made for the Speaker’s office.
The development is coming after the withdrawal of the security aides of the House Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
Meranda’s Special Adviser on Media, Victor Ganzalo, confirmed her security aides’ withdrawal on Thursday.
In a short statement issued to the House of Assembly correspondents in Ikeja, Ganzalo said all personnel providing security at the Assembly complex had also been withdrawn.
“All police escorts guarding the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, and those guarding the Lagos House of Assembly have been withdraw,” he said.
The House has been embroiled in speakership crisis following the removal of Obasa as Speaker over alleged financial impropriety and gross misconduct on January 13.
Lagos Speaker’s security details withdrawn — Media Adviser
Obasa, who was removed as Speaker while out of Nigeria, was immediately replaced by his deputy, Meranda.
He later faulted the process of his impeachment, declaring that he remains the legitimate Speaker of the House.
The lawmaker said: “I am not disturbed; I am not afraid of the developments that happened at the Assembly.
“I believe in removal; there’s no impeachment in the Assembly. You cannot impeach Speaker. Probably, there’s a mistake from them. You can only remove the Speaker.
“I am not afraid to be removed; what else am I looking for if I’ve served as Speaker, and member of the House of Assembly since 2003 up till date? So, what is the problem?
“I believe strongly that I’m still the speaker until the right thing has been done.”
Obasa, February 14, approached the Lagos High Court to challenge his removal by his colleagues.
