Okpebholo dethrones two monarchs over chieftaincy crisis

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved the removal of Zaiki Luckman and Bamidele Obaitanaa as traditional rulers of the Ikpeshi/Egbigere Clan and Ososo Kingdom, respectively, in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

The Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, announced the decision in a statement on Thursday.

He said the action followed a government review of lingering disputes surrounding traditional leadership in both communities, adding that the step was taken to safeguard peace, stability, and due process.

Ikhilor further disclosed the appointment of Mr. Nicholas Odamah as regent of the Ikpeshi/Egbigere Clan, with immediate effect, pending the determination of the rightful successor.

The regent is expected to manage the clan’s affairs in a custodial capacity and ensure strict adherence to government directives.

Regarding Ososo Kingdom, the government directed the elders of the four quarters (Unukhus) and the Council of Chiefs to conduct broad consultations and present a consensus candidate for the vacant throne.

The submission is to be made to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs within a timeline to be communicated later.

The state insisted that the selection process must reflect the customs, rotation system, and collective will of the Ososo people.

The deposed monarchs, Bamidele Obaitan and Zaiki Luckman Odamah, have been ordered to immediately hand over all government property and instruments of office to the Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Council.

Ikhilor added that security agencies have been alerted to maintain peace, prevent any security breaches, and ensure the protection of lives and property across the affected communities.
