One dead as police nab lawyer after masquerade shooting in Rivers

Police operatives have apprehended a lawyer after a shooting during a masquerade display in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

Iringe-Koko said the incident claimed one life, while eight others sustained gunshot injuries.

Iringe-Koko said the incident occurred during a masquerade display by youths in Omoku on Monday, January 19.

“The youths reportedly clashed with a lawyer, Mr Akpudi Ikechukwu, and four officials of the Nigeria Forest Guards,” the police spokesperson noted, adding that the altercation escalated, resulting in gunshots being fired.

She said: “The victim, Obulo, was confirmed dead at the hospital, while eight injured persons are receiving treatment.

“Ikechukwu and two others were arrested and transferred to the State CID for detailed investigation.”

Iringe-Koko added that the police had engaged aggrieved youths to calm tensions, while a joint police-military patrol was deployed to maintain peace in the area.
