Oye Ibidapo-Obe foundation grants 20% fee subsidy to Barton College students

The Oye Ibidapo-Obe Foundation has extended its educational support initiative to Barton College, Lagos, by providing a 20 percent reduction in school fees for all returning students.

The announcement was made during the school’s Independence Day and Award Celebration held on October 1. The Foundation, established in 2019 to assist less privileged students across Nigeria, said the gesture reflects its ongoing commitment to making quality education accessible to every child.

Speaking at the event, the Foundation’s Programme Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Akinremi, described the support as part of a broader mission to remove financial barriers to learning. “Our foundation exists because we believe every child deserves the best possible chance to learn and thrive,” she said.

Confirming the development, the Director and Founder of Barton College, Mrs. Olusola Ibidapo-Obe, expressed optimism that the initiative would motivate students to remain focused and dedicated. “This school year is your chance to shine,” she told the students. “Read every book, ask every question, and tackle every challenge. Remember, being smart isn’t just about what you learn in class—it’s also about taking care of yourself.”

Parents of the students praised the Foundation’s gesture, describing it as timely and impactful amid current economic challenges. Mrs. Chioma Peters, mother of one of the award recipients, said the subsidy was a huge relief. “In this economy, when 20% is taken off school fees, it’s something you truly appreciate,” she noted.

Many parents echoed similar sentiments, expressing gratitude to the Foundation for prioritizing education during difficult times. For them, the gesture is not only financial support but also a message of hope and encouragement for students to work harder.

The Oye Ibidapo-Obe Foundation was established by the late Prof. Ayo Ibidapo-Obe on his 70th birthday in 2019, with the mission of supporting underprivileged students at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels across Nigeria.

Mrs. Ibidapo-Obe explained that combining the Independence Day celebration with the award ceremony was intentional, aimed at fostering patriotism and national pride among students. “We want our students to be patriotic and to understand the value of being Nigerian. They will remember this day not just for the Independence celebration, but for receiving awards that recognize their hard work and potential,” she said.

The event also served as a reunion for alumni and a platform to celebrate outstanding students. One of the guests, Alinor Vanessa, an alumna and former Social Prefect, shared how her experience at Barton College shaped her journey as a Medical Laboratory Science student.

“My time as Social Prefect was more than a badge of leadership; it was a foundation of faith and community that continues to guide me today,” she said. “No dream is too big and no obstacle too great. Start where you are and never give up—determination and preparation will always meet opportunity.”

The celebration concluded with awards presented to deserving students and alumni, underscoring the school’s and the Foundation’s shared commitment to academic excellence and national values.
